Comments:

Strange.  It actually reminded me of the Lovecraft inspired books, only without the monsters.  Though now that I say that, you could say it is a matter of perspective and there are monsters in this book.  Whatever the case, it had a surreal feel.

Anqelique, better known as Mother, runs a shelter for homeless/endangered women and children.  She's seen many come and go, but finds two children that arrive, Chantay and Jamal particularly memorable.  Particularly due to the story Jamal brings with him of Jacky Wacky who protects children from the abusive and neglectful adults in their lives.  Angelique parts way with the children, but they (and the story) make a lasting impact all the way into her last years.
